The 1st Fish Creek Series
Twenty-five 8"x10" paintings of Fish Creek Provincial Park painted between April - May 2020.
At the start of the first lockdown of COVID-19 in 2020, I like many people did not quite know what to make of it all. I knew was that I would be working from home (I am a High School Art Teacher), and my main priority was to ensure that my students were all doing well mentally.
Each morning my family and I would walk in Fish Creek Provincial Park, which we could access easily from our home. The park was empty. No one was venturing outside. So we had the entire place to ourselves. At the time I remember how peaceful everything was, and that despite everything going on, nature persisted. I was inspired. I decided to set a creative goal for myself. I would paint 25 small canvases of Fish Creek in winter. Why 25 paintings? No reason. It seemed like a nice number to aim for. What resulted was an incredibly fulfilling series of paintings. As I look at the images now, I am struck by a few things: the contrast between the green of the water with the white of the snow, and how I was able to work in a smaller format that I was satisfied with. All of these paintings have found a home |
